Amazon deforestation is down 40 percent so far in 2023

The Amazon, which is known as the lungs of the planet, has been hit by the worst bout of deforestation. However, there is a glimmer of hope for the rainforest as deforestation fell 68 per cent in April from the previous year.

The data from the space research agency Inpe showed d that 328.71 square km were cleared in the Brazilian Amazon last month, below the historical average of 455.75 square km for the month. That interrupted two consecutive months of higher deforestation, with land clearing so far this year now down 40.4% to 1,173 square km.
