Italy saw the number of recoveries from the coronavirus overtake that of new infections for the first time, a sign that a nationwide lockdown is significantly checking the disease and starting to ease the burden on the country’s health-care system.

Another encouraging sign is that the number of people in intensive care and in the hospital in general have both been decreasing since early April, according to authorities.
