Heart Attack Deaths Have Plummeted Nearly 90% Over the Last 50 Years

A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association reveals a dramatic drop in heart attack fatalities—an age-adjusted decline of around 90% between 1970 and 2022. Over the same period, overall deaths from heart disease fell by approximately 66%.

This striking progress is credited to medical innovations like bypass surgery, stents, statins, and improved emergency response (including bystander CPR), along with public health efforts to curb smoking and promote healthier lifestyles.

However, the report indicated that deaths caused by heart failure, hypertensive heart disease and arrhythmia accounted for 47% of heart disease-related deaths in 2022, up from 9% in 1970.
