There’s no need to chase the popular 10,000 steps-a-day target—new research shows that walking approximately 7,000 steps daily delivers meaningful health benefits.
A recent study, based on data from 57 studies and over 160,000 adults, found that reaching this “sweet spot” is linked to a 47% lower risk of premature death, 25% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, 38% lower risk of dementia, 22% lower risk of depression, and 28% fewer falls .
Even more encouraging: smaller increases in activity—like moving from 2,000 to 4,000 steps per day—still bring health improvements. While walking beyond 7,000 steps adds modest extra benefits, the gains start to plateau . This makes 7,000 steps a realistic and impactful daily goal for long-term well-being.
