Scotland became the first nation in the world to guarantee free sanitary products to all students at schools, colleges, and universities. It’s part of a £5.2 million ($6.7 million) government plan to fight “period poverty”—the problems faced by women who struggle to cover their basic needs while menstruating.
In a recent survey, researchers determined that approximately one in four students at school, college, or university struggle to obtain period products. The Scottish government also says it intends to make period products free for everyone — not just students.
Period poverty continues to be a serious global issue — one that can also lead to mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression. Hopefully more countries will take a step to fix this issue.
