The Arctic Cleanup project successfully removed over 28,000 kilograms of waste from vulnerable Arctic environments. This initiative, part of a three-year effort under the Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) program, focused on mobilizing volunteers for cleanup operations and citizen science across Arctic regions.
Collaborating with organizations like Hold Norge Rent, Ocean Conservancy, and local partners such as Finnmark Friluftsråd in Norway, the project engaged 1,837 volunteers in 54 cleanup actions throughout the year.
These efforts spanned areas including Finnmark, Iceland, Greenland, and Alaska, with the majority of activities occurring in July. Over the three-year period from 2021 to 2023, Arctic Cleanup organized 74 actions, involving 2,080 volunteers, and collected a total of 52,800 kilograms of waste across 413 kilometers, recording 114,737 items.
These cleanups not only addressed pollution but also aimed to raise awareness among local communities, visitors, industries, and authorities about the importance of protecting the Arctic ecosystem.
