The Benefits of Hugging Trees for Your Health

There are several reasons why hugging trees is fun. First, it’s free. Second, it’s easy. Third, it’s a great way to connect with nature. Fourth, it’s something everyone can do. And fifth, it benefits our health.

Trees have much to offer to us. The average American citizen spends 93% of their hours indoors, and residents of urban areas, who have less regular access to nature, are more likely to be prescribed medication for mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Trees emit a certain type of antimicrobial and insecticidal phytoncide called terpenes, which repel potentially harmful bacteria and insects. If in close proximity, terpenes can strengthen the immune system, lower blood glucose levels, and lower autonomic nervous system activity. This makes tree-hugging a super accessible and natural medicine.

Trees also have the ability to release oxytocin, which provides numerous health benefits. Clinical psychologists have determined that if embraced for a minimum of 21 seconds, trees transfer oxytocin through touch. This is another way that trees improve the immune system, lower stress levels and blood pressure, and help manage sleep patterns.
