1. Introduction
Welcome to The Happy Broadcast — a daily good-news reading app for iOS published by Happy Broadcast, Inc. ("we," "us," or "our"). We built this app because we believe the world needs more uplifting stories and fewer reasons to feel anxious, and that philosophy extends to how we handle your personal information.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use The Happy Broadcast app (the "App"), why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and what choices you have. Please read it carefully. By downloading or using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
If you have questions, you can always reach us at legal@thehappybroadcast.com.
2. Who We Are
Happy Broadcast, Inc. is incorporated in the State of Delaware, United States. For purposes of applicable data-protection law, Happy Broadcast, Inc. is the data controller responsible for your personal information collected through the App.
3. Information We Collect
We collect only the information we genuinely need to operate and improve the App. Here is a plain-English breakdown of every category:
3.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Display Name. If you choose to participate in the Leaderboard, you may enter a display name (a nickname or handle). This display name is visible to other users on the Leaderboard. You are not required to use your real name, and we encourage you to use a pseudonym if you prefer privacy.
3.2 Information Generated by Your Use of the App
- Reading Activity. We record which stories you open or read in order to power features like reading streaks, personalized feeds, and the Leaderboard read count.
- Reading Streaks. We track the number of consecutive days you have opened the App and read at least one story. Your streak count may appear on the Leaderboard alongside your display name.
- Story Reactions. When you react to a story (Smile, Hopeful, or Inspiring), we record that reaction to update the aggregate reaction counts displayed on each story. Individual reactions are not attributed to you publicly.
- Saved Stories. When you bookmark a story, we store a reference to that story so you can retrieve it later, even across devices (if device identifiers match) or app reinstalls.
- Share Activity. We may record when you share a story (e.g., via the native iOS share sheet or to Instagram Stories) to calculate your share count, which may appear on the Leaderboard.
3.3 Device and Technical Information
- Push Notification Token. If you grant permission for push notifications, Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs) issues a device token that we store in order to send you daily and weekly news reminders. Revoking notification permissions in iOS Settings automatically stops delivery; see Section 7 for details.
- Device Identifier / Anonymous Session ID. The App may generate or use an anonymous, app-scoped identifier to associate your in-app activity (streaks, saved stories, reactions) with your session. No account creation, email address, or password is required.
- Crash and Diagnostic Data. iOS may transmit anonymized crash reports to Apple if you have enabled "Share with App Developers" in your iOS privacy settings. We use these reports solely to fix bugs and improve stability.
3.4 Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect your real name, email address, phone number, precise GPS location, contacts, photos (beyond images you explicitly share to Instagram Stories via the native share sheet), payment information, or any other sensitive personal data not described above.
4. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above for the following purposes:
- Operating the App. To display your reading streak, saved stories, Leaderboard ranking, and aggregated story reactions.
- Sending Push Notifications. To deliver the daily "Good news is ready" reminder and the weekly Sunday roundup to users who have opted in.
- The Leaderboard. To display your display name alongside your streak count, total shares, and total reads so other users can see top readers.
- Improving the App. To understand which categories and stories are most popular, fix bugs, and inform future product decisions.
- Legal Compliance. To meet our obligations under applicable law, respond to lawful requests, and enforce our Terms of Use.
- Future Features. If we introduce optional accounts, in-app purchases, or advertising, we will update this Privacy Policy and, where required by law, seek your consent before using your information for those new purposes.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your reading activity to build advertising profiles or share it with third-party advertisers. If this changes in the future, we will notify you and give you a meaningful choice.
5. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, our legal bases for processing your personal data are:
- Contract / Legitimate Interest. Processing your reading activity, streak data, saved stories, and reactions is necessary to provide the core App features you expect when you download and use the App.
- Consent. Sending push notifications requires your explicit consent, which you provide when iOS asks whether to allow notifications. You may withdraw consent at any time by disabling notifications in iOS Settings.
- Legitimate Interests. Crash reporting, security monitoring, and product analytics are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in maintaining a safe and improving app, balanced against your privacy interests.
- Legal Obligation. Compliance with applicable law where required.
6. Supabase — Our Data Processor
We use Supabase (Supabase, Inc.) as our backend database and infrastructure provider. Supabase stores and processes data on our behalf in the United States on servers hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS). Supabase is a data processor, meaning it acts only on our documented instructions and may not use your data for its own purposes.
The data stored in Supabase includes your anonymous session identifier, reading activity, streak count, saved story references, story reactions, share activity, display name (if entered), and push notification token. Supabase is bound by contractual data-processing terms consistent with applicable privacy law, including GDPR Standard Contractual Clauses for international transfers.
For more information about Supabase's privacy practices, visit supabase.com/privacy.
7. Push Notifications
The App offers two types of push notifications:
- Daily Reminder. A short notification — typically "Good news is ready" — sent each day to let you know new stories are available.
- Weekly Sunday Roundup. A once-a-week notification highlighting the best stories from the past week.
iOS will ask for your permission before we can send any notifications. You can change your notification preferences at any time by going to iOS Settings → The Happy Broadcast → Notifications. Turning off notifications removes your device token from our active delivery list; we will retain the token for a reasonable period in case you re-enable notifications, after which it is deleted.
Push notifications are delivered using Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs). Apple receives only the device token and the notification payload (the message text); Apple does not receive any other personal data from us in connection with notification delivery.
8. Leaderboard and Display Names
The Leaderboard is a public-facing feature within the App that ranks users by streak length, total stories read, and total shares. If you appear on the Leaderboard, your display name and those three statistics are visible to all other users of the App.
Important: Your display name is the only piece of information you directly enter that is shared with other users. We strongly encourage you to choose a pseudonym rather than your real name if you wish to remain anonymous. Once a display name is set, it may be visible to others until you change it or contact us to have your data deleted.
Display names must comply with our Terms of Use (no offensive, discriminatory, or misleading names). We reserve the right to remove or replace display names that violate these standards.
9. Third-Party Services
In addition to Supabase, the App interacts with the following third-party services:
- Apple App Store and Apple Search Ads. Apple collects information in connection with App Store purchases, downloads, and advertising attribution pursuant to Apple's own privacy policies. We receive only aggregated, anonymized attribution data. Apple's privacy policy is available at apple.com/legal/privacy.
- Instagram (Meta). If you share a story to Instagram Stories using the native share sheet, your device passes the content to Instagram's app directly. We do not transmit any data to Meta; the share is handled entirely on your device by iOS and the Instagram app.
- Future Advertising Networks. We may in the future integrate ad networks such as Google AdMob. If we do, we will update this Privacy Policy and provide any required consent mechanisms before such integration goes live. Any ads would be non-personalized unless you separately consent to personalized advertising.
10. International Data Transfers
Happy Broadcast, Inc. is based in the United States, and your information is stored on Supabase servers located in the United States. If you access the App from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Canada, or another jurisdiction with data transfer restrictions, your personal data will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
We rely on the following transfer mechanisms:
- For transfers from the EEA and UK: Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission and incorporated into our agreement with Supabase.
- For transfers from other jurisdictions: applicable derogations for contractual necessity or your explicit consent, as required.
We are committed to providing an equivalent level of protection to your data regardless of where it is processed.
11. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as is necessary to provide the App's features and meet our legal obligations. Specifically:
- Active session data (reading activity, streaks, reactions, saved stories): retained for the life of your anonymous session or until you request deletion.
- Display name and Leaderboard data: retained until you change your display name or request deletion.
- Push notification token: retained while you have notifications enabled; deleted within a reasonable period after you disable notifications or uninstall the App.
- Aggregated, anonymized analytics: retained indefinitely as they no longer constitute personal data.
If you request deletion of your data (see Section 13), we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
12. Data Security
We take reasonable and appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures include encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS), access controls limiting who within our team can access the database, and regular review of our security practices.
No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a data breach that affects your rights, we will notify you and relevant regulators as required by applicable law.
13. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have some or all of the following rights with respect to your personal information:
13.1 Rights Under GDPR (EEA, UK, Switzerland)
- Right of Access. Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to Rectification. Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"). Request deletion of your personal data where there is no compelling reason for its continued processing.
- Right to Restriction of Processing. Ask us to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
- Right to Data Portability. Receive your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Right to Object. Object to processing based on legitimate interests, including for direct marketing.
- Right to Withdraw Consent. Where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
- Right to Lodge a Complaint. File a complaint with your local data protection authority (e.g., your EU Member State's supervisory authority or the UK ICO).
13.2 Rights Under CCPA / CPRA (California Residents)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), grants you the following rights:
- Right to Know. Request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, our business or commercial purposes for collecting it, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it.
- Right to Delete. Request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
- Right to Correct. Request correction of inaccurate personal information.
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing. We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If this changes, we will provide a clear opt-out mechanism.
- Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information. We do not collect sensitive personal information as defined by the CPRA.
- Right to Non-Discrimination. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA/CPRA rights.
To submit a CCPA request, please visit our dedicated CCPA page at thehappybroadcast.com/ccpa or email us at legal@thehappybroadcast.com. We will respond within the timeframes required by law (generally 45 days, with one possible 45-day extension).
13.3 How to Exercise Your Rights
To exercise any of the rights described above, contact us at legal@thehappybroadcast.com with the subject line "Privacy Rights Request." Because we do not collect your email address during normal App use, we may ask you to provide your anonymous session ID (available in App settings) or your display name to help us locate your data. We will respond within 30 days.
14. Children's Privacy
The Happy Broadcast is intended for users who are at least 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has used the App and provided personal information (such as a display name), please contact us at legal@thehappybroadcast.com and we will promptly delete the relevant information.
If you are between 13 and 18 years of age, we encourage a parent or guardian to review this Privacy Policy with you.
15. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, legal requirements, or new App features. When we make material changes, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notice through the App (such as an in-app notification). Your continued use of the App after any update constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
We encourage you to review this page periodically.
