In 2024, clean energy sources—including renewables and nuclear—supplied over 40% of the world’s electricity for the first time since the 1940s, according to Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2025. This milestone was driven by record growth in solar power, which has doubled in capacity over the past three years and has been the fastest-growing energy source globally for two decades. Solar energy accounted for nearly 7% of global electricity, while wind contributed just over 8%, and hydroelectric power remained the largest renewable source at 14%.
Despite this progress, fossil fuels still dominate the global electricity mix, with coal providing 34% and natural gas 22%. However, the rapid expansion of clean energy sources is expected to continue displacing fossil fuels in the coming years. Ember’s analysis suggests that the growth of renewables, particularly solar and wind, is sufficient to meet future electricity demands and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
