Scientists have successfully germinated a 1,000-year-old seed, believed to be from a lost biblical plant known for its medicinal properties.
The seed, discovered in a Judean Desert cave, belongs to a rare species of the Commiphora family, related to plants that produce aromatic resins such as myrrh. Nicknamed “Sheba,” the tree is thought to be linked to the “Balm of Gilead” or “Judean Balsam,” referenced in ancient texts for its use in incense, perfume, medicine (including treatments for cataracts), embalming, and as an antidote to poisons.
The success of this project not only offers insights into ancient cultures but also opens up possibilities for the revival of other historically significant plants with medicinal potential.
